Not
only do celebs get lots of free stuff, but now their babies are cashing
in on the gravy train as well, with extravagant baby showers and lots
and lots of free giveaways. Some celebrities are choosing to sell their
baby's photo to the highest bidder and keep the winnings for college and
insurance against ever getting a job. Others are choosing to turn this
rat-race on its head and use the money to help those who could really
use the funds. Here are the seven best celebrity couples using their
babies for the greater good.
1. Nicole Richie and Joel Madden and Daughter Harlow

When news hit that Nicole Richie
was pregnant, she was dealing with a bit of a rap sheet and partying
like it was 1999. Who knew this one time wild child had such a do-gooder
streak in her. New parents Richie & Madden established the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation to provide aid to non-profit organizations working on health care, education, and human rights.
But
that's not all. For Harlow's baby shower, they asked that guests
instead make donations to their foundation instead of bringing gifts.
The foundation linked directly to the Los Angeles Free Clinic,
which would update the the wish-list based on the needs of women in the
area. The site was then opened up for six months so anyone who wanted
to "donate to Nicole" could give to the Foundation and help area women
in need. The baby shower itself was a Wizard of Oz-themed shindig and
helped out over 100 families at the Los Angeles Clinic. Guests were
asked to also bring a baby book which was used to build up Harlow's library.
Over $200,000 was raised and given to moms in Los Angeles. As this tiny
tot has gotten older, the pair have since auctioned off much of
Harlow's baby clothes at Handmedowns.com to raise money for their charity. Now that Nicole is pregnant once again, here's to hoping she has more good up her sleeve.
And
a note on the ranking: While Viv and Knox Jolie-Pitt (#2) may have
raked in more cash, the Richie-Madden gang seemed to go above and beyond
a single cash donation, with a major impact in their community.
2. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Daughter Shiloh and New Twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon

This
power couple has been working their magic all over the globe the last
few years, and when they started having children, the giving didn't
stop. When Shiloh Jolie-Pitt was born, the couple was given $4.1 million
for exclusive rights to the first photos. What did they do? They turned
around and donated those funds to african children's charities. Then
when the world got wind of the possibility of twins, magazines were
beside themselves trying to get exclusive rights to those those pics.
Rumors escalated to upwards of $15 million for those pictures and some
sources speculated even higher. When it was all said and done, the Jolie-Pitts
were awarded $14 million USD for the pictures, which they promptly
turned around and used to launch an international children's charity.
Right on.
3. Sheryl Crow and Son Wyatt

Sheryl
Crow is no stranger to benefit concerts or raising money and awareness
for charities. So when she announced to the world in 2008 that she would
be adopting a new baby boy, it was not surprising that she joined the
ranks of celebrities using their status to help others in the process.
At first, Crow
was against selling son Wyatt to the world by getting paid for baby
photos, but as she was nursing him and watching world hunger programming
on television, she realized that there was something else she could do.
So she asked that OK! Magazine make a sizable donation to the World Food Program (a United Nations program that works to fight child hunger) in exchange for the pictures, which they gladly did.
Taking
it home, Crow also hosted an all-natural baby shower for Wyatt. Gifts
were given without wrapping paper, invitations were written on
seed-filled cards, and all of the food was organic.
4. Bridget Moynahan and Son John Edward Thomas Moynahan.
When her son John arrived on the scene, Bridget Moynahan
decided to sell the photos and donate the money to charity. Several of
her friends have children with complications and so she chose to gift
money to both the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance and to the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation in exchange for exclusive rights to the first shots of her son. 5. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale and Son Zuma

It's
not too long since Gwen's last pregnancy, with Zuma Nesta Rock
Rossdale, but Gwen and Gavin can't seem to get rid of the baby stuff
fast enough. Does this mean the pair are done with making babies? First,
they recently donated clothing from Kingston and Zuma's wardrobes to Handmedowns.com to raise money for charity. Next, Gwen gave away some of her maternity clothing to another online charity auction--Clothes Off Our Back--which helps a variety of charities including h.e.l.p. Malawi.
6. Larry Birkhead and the Late Anna Nicole Smith and Daughter Dannielynn

After
the tragic death of both Daniel Smith and Anna Nicole Smith, the scene
was quickly followed up by the media circus of who would inherit the
potential $500,000 and the empire of late oil tycoon, J. Howard
Marshall. A few blood samples later and Larry Birkhead
was crowned winner of a new baby girl and the consolation prize of an
untold amount of money. While there were no baby "birth" pictures for
him to worry about whether to sell or not to sell, Birkhead has still
chosen to use his powers for good instead of evil and recently donated
some of Dannielynn's clothing to an online auction raising money for Camp Kindle--a charity that cares for children with HIV and AIDS.
7. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck and Daughter Violet
Back in 2005 when Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were expecting baby #1, Garner's hometown of Charlestown, West Virginia threw this sweetheart couple a baby shower, and the whole town was invited. All fans could attend a Virginia Power minor league baseball
game free if they brought a "gift" for the new baby, or if their name
was Jennifer. Unfortunately the couple was not in attendance that night,
but over 410 gifts were collected, all of which went to Starting
Points, a non-profit group that helps out children in need under the age
of 8.
