It's the night of all nights in Hollywood -- the 2012 Academy Awards. For weeks, anticipation has been building as we await news of who will walk away with the Oscars and who will walk away empty handed.
But the real winners and losers are often determined long before the ceremony even starts -- on the red carpet. The gowns, the hair, the jewels, and all of the glittering goodness are the real reason many of us can't wait for this big night. Already tonight we've seen some noteworthy duds, not all of which are necessarily to be noted for good reason. But like them or loathe them, here are five red carpet looks from the 2012 Academy Awards that will surely have people talking.
Stacy Keibler
Dressed in a gold Marchesa gown, many said she looked like an Oscar statuette herself on George Clooney's arm. I found her stunning and think her side-swept hair was the perfect accent.
Rooney Mara
The bangs are intense for sure, and I'm not sure I'm loving them. Maybe they'll grow on me ... or at least out on her. The white Givenchy gown, however, was flawless.
Michelle Williams
Sure to receive many nominations for best dressed, Michelle was stunning in coral Louis Vuitton. Intricate with layers and ruffles, the overall look was still simple elegance. The feminine look was also a nice contrast to her menswear-inspired look at the Independent Spirit awards last night.
Sacha Baron Cohen
Dressed as his character from the upcoming movie The Dictator, he proceeded to spill the "ashes" of Kim Jong II from an urn onto Ryan Seacrest. "We need to clean this up!" he yelled. "But if someone asks you what you are wearing, say Kim Jong Il!" Not amusing.

Emma Stone
Like a big present, Stone stood out in a fuchsia Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress. The idea was nice, but that bow is bigger than her head. A smaller one would have been less girl-devoured-by-bow.
Oscars red carpet Q&A
Oscar clothing can reveal more than a single, spray-tanned shoulder or an improbable tattoo. Personalities come to light through the arrangement of fabric panels and mermaid trains and palm-size paillettes. Whether in tux or gown, in satin or chiffon, the figures on the red carpet get to be themselves without the protection of a role or an entourage. We started the night with some pointed questions and scanned the crowd for answers. Is Jessica Chastain the Jessica Lange of her era or Jessica Rabbit?
Jessica Rabbit. Her goth gown featured a mess of appliques that looked like it was licked by flames. Worse than that: Its strapless top gathered up the skin at her shoulders as if she were in a yanked-tight corset.
Will George Clooney remove all hints of his schlubby "Descendants"character?
Yes, no mahalo vibe emanating from his Matt Lauer buzzcut and viva-Italia tux by Armani, which was set off with full-grown tie and studs and lapels. These signature sartorial details, like head-tilts and side-squints from his actorly repertoire, were hard to miss.
Which young thing looked unnecessarily old?
“Super stoked” though she confessed she was, 20-year-old Shailene Woodley wore a long white nun’s habit with keyhole cutouts. The Valentino Couture expanse of fabric reminded young women everywhere that they need not hide their arms.
Is Melissa McCarthy trying for Mae West curve-hugging or Camryn Manheim
bulge-hiding?
Manheim, which is odd for an actress who went to school for fashion design and wants to start her own label. For all its balance, it was safe, and the label, Marina Rinaldi, is becoming the Lane Bryant of Hollywood.
Did Rooney Mara go goth or glam? Will she attempt a smile?
She let go of her severe geometric outfits in favor of an ivory Givenchy that had both imagination and frills. But her shelf of bangs preserved her edge. And yes, she attempted a smile, and it succeeded.
Is skinny Jonah Hill flaunting it?
Yes, but it didn’t serve him well. Black on black made the “Moneyball” star look decidedly less money. And older. And larger.
Will Jean Dujardin ever dare to break out of his character?
Jamais, jamais, jamais. Tuxed and slicked as “Artist”-ically as ever, he won the Roberto Benigni award for unrestrained European-ness.
Which performers announced, wordlessly, that we’ll be seeing more of them?
Rose Byrne ditched all “Bridesmaids” attire for a one-shoulder, black-sequined column dress, topped with a bob that hairdressers will be urged to copy. And sharply suited ex-Vulcan* Zachary Quinto sported some big frames that drew all eyes to his eyes.
How will Angelina Jolie show support for nominated partner Brad Pitt?
By letting her hair down. Her usual chilly perfection gave way to a warmer mien, with a tousled hairdo and a black velvet dress from Atelier Versace similarly cascaded downward, baring a leg. Or two.
Who accomplished little this year in the way of movie-making but made up for it in red-carpet originality?
Gwyneth Paltrow. America's new Betty Draper bested all the old Betty Draper imitators with a snow-white Tom Ford gown and floor-length cape. And space-age bracelet. And mod blonde low ponytail. Her message: "I know what I'm doing."
Of the “Saturday Night Live” comedy goddesses, who got serious with her gownage?
Kristen Wiig popped the bubbly in her champagne-colored spray of tiers by J Mendel, besting Tina Fey’s semi-flattering Carolina Herrera navy dress and Maya Rudolph’s laughable Johanna Johnson thing.
How would Viola Davis preserve her streak of showing up EVERYONE this awards season?
By taking off the wig! Letting her hair alone for the big night made her smile somehow wider, and her emerald gown more gleaming.
Which young mom looks like a junior miss?
In a Louis Vuitton strapless dress, she showed off feather-light strips of coral that folded and flared in controlled proportions. For her, it proved that sometimes a fashion adventuress still wants to go to a prom.
Oscars 2012 Best-Dressed: The Stars Who Made Our Jaws Drop (PHOTOS)
Every year at the Oscars there is that moment when we fall off the couch because an actress took a style risk and blew the competition out of the water. Last year it was Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Haute Couture, at the 2012 Oscars it was Gwyneth Paltrow in a look right out of Tom Ford's fall 2012 collection (which was just shown a few days ago).
There were other stunners at the 2012 Oscars: Viola Davis in vibrant green (with that hair!), Octavia Spencer in silver and Jessica Chastain in black and gold. But Gwynnie took it to the next level. See the other ladies that made our jaws drop and see who made our worst-dressed list along with our best and worst beauty picks.

Celeb Style: Best Dressed Bumps at the Oscars

“Some of the dresses didn’t fit me so we went for bigger sizes,” the model mom-to-be, who attended the 20th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, told PEOPLE. “[But] in the end it all worked. This one is very comfortable on the red carpet.”
After a few adjustments, Ambrosio decided on a blush-colored, jewel-encrusted gown by Roberto Cavalli paired with Salvatore Ferragamo heels and Martin Katz diamonds.
On the other hand, Molly Sims opted for a red hot, kimono-style Azzaro dress and black patent Christian Louboutin pumps for the Vanity Fair Oscar party.
The expectant model/actress even Tweeted a candid photo of her lovely ensemble before heading out for the festivities. “Beautiful day for the Oscars! Here’s a full look at my Azzaro dress and baby bump!”

Kourtney Kardashian was a vision in white at Elton John’s viewing party. The soon-to-be mom-of-two, who recently revealed she’s expecting a girl, wore Raoul‘s gold-trimmed Penelope dress.
But it was Kristin Cavallari who experienced the biggest surprise of the day. ”My stomach literally grew double overnight!!” the expectant reality star Tweeted Sunday. “This belly came out of nowhere!”
Luckily, Cavallari had no problem fitting into her glam pale gray gathered strapless gown, which she paired with nude Christian Louboutin peep-toe heels to host E!’s Academy Awards pre-show.
Oscars 2012 Worst-Dressed: See Whose Looks Went Awry (PHOTOS)
Style-wise, the Oscars are a time to shine -- or a time to fall flat on your face. We saw dresses that were draped to the hilt, so much so that it looked like the ladies were wearing their...drapes.We saw Jennifer Lopez wear pantyhose on her arms (and possibly suffer a wardrobe malfunction?). And Angelina Jolie, we have a bone to pick with you: the fact that you are drop-dead gorgeous doesn't give you license to wear the same boring black dress every awards season. Check out our picks for worst-dressed of the evening and tell us in the comments section if you share our feelings.

Angelina Jolie, Michelle Williams, Octavia Spencer Shine On The Red Carpet
The Oscars sends A-list actresses into a spin every year, as they're forced to pick from the dozens of beautiful dresses sent to them by designers, pluck from treasure chests of bling and make the potentially career-defining decision - up or down? - as their makeup, handbags, jewellery and hair are also forensically scrutinised by the world's fashion police.
Last night's red carpet stunners included The Help duo Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis who, despite being relative newcomers to the red carpet scene, have had lots of practice this season with all the attention their Deep South drama has enjoyed.
Red carpet regular Angelina Jolie got her look spot on, keeping it simple in black but sending the cameras into a frenzy after showing a bit of leg, a pose that was mocked mercilessly by the Oscar-winning screenwriters of The Descendants when they arrived on stage to collect their gongs.
Meanwhile, Michelle Williams glowed in tangerine and J-lo rocked a gorgeous golden number.
But it's not all about the girls, a certain Dictator also made it into our gallery for his the little military number he was sporting on the red carpet.'

Cameron Diaz vs Gwyneth Paltrow
